Social media giant, Twitter, has announced that the blue verification badge is now available for all.
The blue badge is a sign of authenticity of an account and allows people to identify high-profile individuals and organisations. There are around 187,000 accounts that are currently verified.
The platform first introduced account verification in 2009 with @Oprah, @TonyHawk and @NASAArmstrong being some of the first accounts to receive the blue badge.
An online application process has been produced for users to apply to gain the verified status, if it is deemed to be of public interest. Those wanting to apply for verification will still need to meet certain criteria, including having a website, verified phone number and email address.
When applying to become verified a user will be asked to provide links that will help Twitter identify them, as well as a 500 character explanation as to why the account should be verified.
Twitter’s vice president of user services, Tina Bhatnagar, has said: “Our goal with this update is to help more people find great, high-quality accounts to follow, and for creators and influencers - no matter where they are in the world - to easily connect with a broader audience.”.
The little blue tick can carry huge benefits for a brand or organisation.
From the user’s perspective, the ability to immediately recognise that an account is official and is of public interest is a benefit and could lead to engagement.
From a business perspective becoming verified comes with additional features. One feature that is available, once verified, is the ability to better manage incoming conversations by toggling between three categories: “all”, “mentions” and “verified”. This could help the brand or organisation efficiently engage with their audience.
